Lesson 57 Amplified – SKANDALIZO

 SKANDALIZO

American: trip, entrap, scandalize

SKANDALON -- SKANDALA

American singular: a stumbling block, a snare a scandal --

plural: stumbling blocks, snares, scandals

PROSKOMMA

American: stub, tripper

PROSKOPTAI

American: trips over

Many, many times, in the New Blood Covenant, Jesus, the Christ, is portrayed as a tripper of the Judaeans. He upset their fervent wish for the Kingdom of God to be elevating them to reign in the present time.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

1st Corinthians 1.20: Where is the wise? Where is the grammateus [writer, recorder, scribe, secretary]? Where is the sophos [disputer, sophist] of this age? Didn't Theos make the wisdom of this kosmou [universe, world, cosmos] foolish? For since (in the wisdom of Theos) the kosmos not knew Theos via wisdom, Theos was pleased (via the foolishness of kerugmatos [proclamation] sosai [to make safe, to save] those pisteuontas [having faith]. Jews ask for a semeion [sign, indication] and Greeks seek wisdom but we kerussouen [herald, proclaim] the Christou [Anointed One, Messiah, Christ] having been crucified. To Judaeans He is a skandalon and to Greeks He is foolishness but to the invited ones (both to Jews and to Greeks [all non-Jews]) the Christon is the dunamin [force, power] and the wisdom of Theos. For the stupid one of Theos is wiser than men and the weak one of Theos is stronger than men.

Romans 14.13: Then let us no longer krinomen [distinguish, decide, judge, put on trial] one another; conversely, krinate [judge] this: not to place a proskomma or a set a skandalon for a brother. I know (and am convinced in the Kurio Jesus) that not even one thing is common via [defiled of] itself, except to the one counting [deeming] anything to be defiled; to him it is defiled. If via your food, your brother is grieved, you no longer walk down to agapen [unconditional love]. Via your food, don’t utterly destroy him for whom the Christos died. Accordingly, not let the to-you-good foods be vilified for the kingdom of Theos isn’t eating and drinking; conversely, it is dikaiosune [equity, justification, rightness] and peace and joy to in the Hagios Pneuma. For the one serving the Christo in these ways is totally acceptable to Theos and approved by men. So then, let us pursue the issues of peace and the issues for building up one another. Don’t undo the work of Theos because of food. Everything is in fact clean, but kakon [worthless] to the man eating via a proskommatos. It is good not to eat meat nor to drink wine nor to do anything in which your brother proskoptai or is skandakizetai or is asthenei [feeble, weak]. Do you have pistin [faith]? Down to yourself, hold it in front of Theos. The one not krinon [judging] himself is supremely blest in what he tests but he discriminating, if he eats something that he regards as defiled, has been condemned because his eating is not emergent from pisteos. Everything not emergent from pistis is hamartia [missing the mark or goal; erring, offending, sinning].

Luke 17. Now, He said to the mathetas [learners, pupils, disciples], “It is inconceivable that skandala shouldn’t come but woe to him via whom they come. It is advantageous to him if a millstone (so large as turned of [by] an ass) be put around his neck and he be tossed into the sea than that he should entrap one of these micron [little ones]. Watch out for yourselves! Now, if your brother hamarte to you, admonish him and if he metanonse [thinks differently, turns about 180 degrees, repents], aphes [send forth, forsake, forgive] him. And if he hamarte seven times of the [in a] day to you and seven times of the day reverts upon you saying, ‘I metanoo,’ you apheseis [shall send forth, shall forsake, shall forgive] him.”

Mark 6: And He went out (emergent from there) and comes into His native town [Nazareth] and his mathetai accompany Him. And it was caused to be a sabbath. He began to teach in the synagogue and many, hearing, were struck with astonishment, saying, “From where comes, to this One, these words? And what wisdom has been given to Him that truly this dunameis is caused to be via His hands? Isn’t He the carpenter, the Son of Mary, the brother of Jacob, and Joseph, and Judah, and Simeon. And aren’t His sisters in this same place near to us?” And they were eskandalizonto [tripped, snared, scandalized] in Him. And Jesus said to them that a prophetes [before teller, prophet] isn’t atimos [unvalued, not esteemed] if not [except] in His native town and in [among] His relatives and in His home. And He wasn’t able to do dunamin [power works] there, if not [except] laying His hands on puny [a few] infirm ones. Them He healed.

Matthew 13.39: Now, the reaping is the total completing of the age. Now, the harvesters are aggeloi [messengers, angels]. Accordingly, just as the darnel is collected and totally consumed in fire, thus it shall be in the total completion of this age. The Son of Man shall send forth His aggelous and they will collect, emergent from His Kingdom, all the skandala and those doing illegality and they will throw them into the furnace of fire. There [in that place] shall be lamenting and grinding of teeth. Then is when the dikaioi will brightly shine, in the way the sun does, in the Kingdom of their Father.

Lesson 56 Amplified – IDIOTES

IDIOTES -- IDIOTAI

singular: know-nothing, ignoramus, idiot -- plural: know-nothings, ignoramuses, idiots

We Americans throw the word “idiot” around rather loosely. It is often used to indicate the opinion that the subject of the remark is mentally inferior. The Koine Greek meaning is one who is ignorant or unschooled.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

1st Corinthians 14.13: Therefore, let him, speaking in a glosse [tongue, language], proseuchestho [humbly beg God, pray] in order that he may be able to dierueneue [thoroughly explain, interpret]. For if I proseuchomai in a glosse, my pneumati [breath, spirit], proseuchomai but my nous [intellect, mind, understanding] is empty. Then, what is to be? I will proseuchomai with the [my] pneumati and I will also proseuchomai with the [my] nous. I sing with the [my] pneumati and I also sing with the [my] nous. If you eulogeses [speak well of, praise, bless] in the pneumati, how will the one occupying the position of the idiotes say the “Amen” to your eucharistia [gratefully giving thanks], since he not knows what you say? Indeed, you echaristeis well but the other isn’t built up. I echaristo to my Theos that I speak in glossais more than all of you. Conversely, in an ekklesia [assembly, church], I determine rather to speak five logoi [words] with my nous in order that I may also instruct others than murioi [10,000; innumerable, myriads] of logoi in glosse.

1st Corinthians 14.22: So, glossai are for a semeion [sign, indication], not to those pisteuousin [having faith]; conversely, to those apistois [without faith]. And propheteia [inspired speech, prophesy] isn’t to those apistois, conversely, to those pisteuousin. Therefore, if the whole ekklesia convenes together and all speak in glossais and in comes someone apistoi or idiotes, will not he say, “You rave!” But if all propheteuosin [before tell, speak under inspiration, prophesy] and comes in someone apistos or idiotes, he is scrutinized by everything spoken and so the musterion [secrets, mysteries] of his heart are caused to be shining [apparent] and so, falling on his face, he proskunesei [worships, as a dog licks his master’s hand] Theos, announcing in this way that Theos is in you.

2nd Corinthians 11.5: For I consider myself not in even one way inferior to the much superior apostolon [delegates, ambassadors, apostles] even if I am an idiotes in logos [speech], yet not in knowledge. In fact, I have revealed this to you in the whole of my communications.

Lesson 55 Amplified – ETHNOS

 ETHNOS – ETHNOI

American: sing; nation, race, non-Jew, gentile – plur; nations, races, non-Jews, gentiles

Hebrew: gowy

There were two distinct groupings of people in the days of which the New Blood Covenant or New Testament writings were written -- the ethnoi and the Jews. The apostles treated them differently. They send one contingent to save the Jews and another contingent to save the ethnoi.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

GENESIS 22.18: [YHWH speaking] “… surely, I will multiply your zera [descendants] as the stars of the skies and the sand which is on the lip of the sea. Your Zera [Jesus, the Christ] shall own the gate of His enemies. All the gowy of the earth shall be blest in your Zera …”

Romans 4.16: Because of this, it is of pisteos [faith, reliance] and that down to charin [graciousness], to set [confirm] the epaggelian [announcement, proclamation, promise] to the whole population of the spermati [descendants] (not only to the sperma of The Law [the Jews]), conversely, also to that of the pisteos of Abraham, who is the father of us all. Even as it has been written,

“As father of many ethnon, I have placed you.”

GENESIS 17.4-6: Elohiym spoke with Abram saying, “I AM! LO! My blood covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of a crowd of gowy.”

Continuing Romans: And this was before Theos, in Whom he episteuse [had faith], the One making alive the dead and calling the things not being into being. Near elpida [expectation, hope] upon elpidi, he episteusen [had faith] toward his being caused to be a father of many ethnon down to what was said, “So, shall your sperma be.”

GENESIS 22.16: “By Myself have I sworn,” groans YHWH, “because you have obeyed My dabar [logos] and haven’t spared your son (your one and only son), I will bless you and bless you. I will increase and increase your zera as the stars of the heavens and as the sand that is on the lip of the sea. Your zera shall own the gates of their adversaries. In your zera, all the gowy of the earth shall be blest because you have listened to and obeyed My voice.”

Romans11.11: I say then, didn’t they [the Jews] trip [stumble, err] in order that they fall? Not let it be caused to be! Conversely, by their paraptomati [unintentional sideslips, lapses, deviations] came soteria [rescue, safety, salvation] to the ethnesin to provoke them to jealousy. But if their paraptomati be wealth to the kosmou [universe, world, cosmos] and their deterioration [failure] be wealth to the ethnon, think how much more wealth their completion will be! In fact, I am apostolos [delegate, ambassador, apostle] over the ethnon, therefore, I speak to you, the ethnon. I glorify my service if (somehow) I may make my own flesh [race] jealous and soso [may make safe, may save] some emergent from them.

Romans 11.25: Now, I don't want you to be ignorant of this musterion [secret, mystery], brothers, (lest you be wise in yourselves [your own estimation]) that a part off Israel is caused to be callous until the ethnon enter completion and then in this way all Israel sothesetai [will be made safe, will be saved], just as has been written, “The Rescuer will arrive emergent from Zion and He will turn away [back] Jacob from impiety.”

ISAIAH 59.20: “... the Redeemer comes to Zion and to those in Jacob, turning them back from rebellion.”

Acts 13.44: Now, the coming sabbath, all the city was convened to hear the Logon of Theos. Now, seeing the throng, the Judaeans were filled with zelou [heat: jealousy, envy, malice] and disputed the words being spoken through Paul; disputing and blasphemountes [speaking irreverently, profanely; blaspheming]. But Paul and Joses Bar Nabas said, “Firstly, it was necessary that the Logon [Word] of Theos be spoken to you but now, since you reject it and krinete [distinguish, decide, judge, put on trial] yourselves not deserving of eternal life, LO! we turn to the ethne for the Kurios commanded us: ‘I have placed you into a luminescence of the ethnon. You are to be to soterian, until [as far as] the ends of the earth.’” Now, hearing this, the ethnon rejoiced and rendered glory to the Logon of the Kuriou and as many as episteusan [had faith] were assigned into eternal life. Now, the Logos of the Kuriou was carried via the whole territory but the Judaeans incited the devout, well-formed [high-ranking] gunaikas [women] and the chiefs of the city and roused persecution upon Paul and Joses Bar Nabas and they ejected the same from their borders.

Acts 15.12: Now, all the crowd kept silent and heard Joses Bar Nabas and Paul recounting what semeia [signs, indications] and terata [wonders, miracles] Theos did (via them) in [among] the ethnesi. Now, amidst their keeping silent, James Bar Joseph responded, saying, “Men! brothers! listen to me! Simeon the Rock has recounted, just as firstly, Theos saw fit to take emergent from the ethnon a people upon whom His name [authority] would rest. And the logoi of the propheton [before tellers, prophets] are harmonious to this,

Acts 15.19: [“James the Just” continues] “Via this, I not krino to further harass those from the ethnon who are reverting upon Theos. Conversely, command in writing to them to hold themselves off from the defilements of idols and off from porneia [whoring, incest, non-marital sexual intercourse] and off from eating the flesh of strangled and not bled animals and off from consuming blood.”

[The apostles thus freed the gentiles from circumcision and obeying The LAW which the Judaeans were attempting to foist upon the newly saved gentiles.]

Lesson 54 Amplified – GUNE

 GUNE -- GUNAI

American singular: woman, wife -- plural: women, wives

Hebrew Aramaic singular: ishshah

Have you ever heard a man say, referring to his wife, my woman? In Koine Greek one word is used for woman, that is gune. Apparently, the men of biblical times used this word as the man mentioned above.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

Galatians 4: Now, I say, over so long a time as the heir is an infant, he differs in not even one way from a slave. Although being kurios of the whole of existence, conversely, he is under guardians and managers until the date set (before) by his father. It is the same with us also. When we were infants, we were being enslaved under the system of the kosmos [universe, world, cosmos] but when the period of time was fulfilled, Theos sent forth His Son being caused to come into being emergent from gunaikos [woman]; being caused to come into being under The Law, in order that He might redeem those under The Law, in order that we might receive adoption as sons. Now, you are sons.

1st Corinthians 7: But concerning what you wrote to me, it is good for a man not to attach himself to a gunaikos but via [because of] porneias [whorings, incests, non-marital sexual intercourses] each one has his own gunaika and each gune has her own man [husband]. Let the man give due eunoia [kindness, conjugal love] to his gunaiki and likewise, the gune to her man. The gune hasn’t authority over her own somatos [body], conversely, her man has. Likewise, the man hasn’t authority over his own somatos; conversely, the gune has. Don’t deprive one another unless in accord (in order that you may take a vacation for a time) for fasting and for proseuche [humbly begging God, praying] and come back together (in conjugal love making) in order that Satanas may not tempt you via your having lack of self-restraint. Now, this I say as concession, not as a command, for I wish all men to be as I myself am but each one has his own charisma [gift, endowment, faculty, deliverance] from Theos; one thus and one thus.

1st Corinthians 7.8: I say to the unmarried and widows that it is kalon [beautiful, virtuous] for them if they also remain single as I am. But if they not exercise self-restraint, let them marry for it is better to marry than to be inflamed with lust. To those having married, I command (not I but the Kurios) that a gunaika isn’t to be separated [divorced] from her man but if she is separated [divorced], to remain unmarried or to be reconciled to her man. A man isn’t to send away his gunaika. To the rest I say (I, not the Kurios), if any brother who has an apistos [without-faith] gunaika and she is pleased to live with him, not let him send her away. A gune with faith in Jesus, who has an apistos man and he is pleased to live with her, not let her send him away. For the apistos man hegiastai [has been made holy] by the of-the-faith gunaiki and the apistos gune hegiastia by the of-the-faith man, otherwise your children are [would be] impure but now they are hagia [holy ones, sacred ones, consecrated ones; saints]. But if the apistos separates, let them be separated. The brother or sister isn’t in bondage in such matters. Theos has called us in peace. For how know you, O gunai! whether you will soseis [make safe, save] your man or how know you, O man! whether you will soseis your gunaika?

1st Corinthians 7.39: A gune has been bound by The Law [Pentateuch, Books of Moses, Torah, first five books of the Old Testament] for as long a time as her man lives but if her man sleeps in death, she is free thelei [to determine, to choose, to decide] to whom she is to be married (only in the Kurios [not to a heathen]) but in my opinion, she is happier if she remains as she is and I think I have the opinion of the Hagios Pneuma of Theos.

GENESIS 18.10: And He [Son of YHWH] said, “For certain I will return to you at the time of life [birth?] and LO! a son to your ishshah Sarah.”

Luke 1.28: And entering to her [Mary, the mother of Jesus], the aggelos said,“Cheers, to you, the one charitoo [receiving graciousness]! The Kurios is amidst you. Eulogemene [spoken well of, praised, blessed] are you in [among] gunaichsin [women]!”

Ephesians 5.31: For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall adhere [bond] to his gunaika and the two shall be (as flesh) one!

GENESIS 2.23: Adam said, “This is, now (at last), bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. This shall be called ishshah [woman] because this has been taken out of iysh [man]. Therefore, shall iysh [a man] leave his father and his mother and dabaq [shall impinge upon, shall cling to, shall adhere to] his ishshah, and they shall become into one flesh.”

Lesson 53 Amplified – PROSKUNEO

PROSKUNEO

American: worships, as a dog licks his master’s hand

PROSKUNETES

American singular: worshipper, adorer, fawner, kneeler

PROSKUNETAI

American plural: worshippers, adorers, fawners, kneelers

This Greek word gives a graphic picture of how we should approach Theos in a worship setting. This might be while we are alone on our knees or during a church service.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

Luke 4.5: And leading Him up into a lofty mountain, the diabolos showed Him (in an instant) all the kingdoms of the land [continents] and the diabolos said to Him, “To You will I give mastery over all of this and their glory because it has been surrendered to me and to whomever I thelo [determine, choose, decide, decree] to give it. Accordingly, if you proskuneses in my face, it will be Yours.” And beginning to speak to him, Jesus said, “Get down out of My sight, behind My back, Satana, for it has been written,

‘You proskuneseis [shall worship] the Kuriou your Theos and Him alone shall you serve.’”

DEUTERONOMY 6.13: [Moses speaking] “You shall fear YHWH your Elohiym [Triune God] and you shall serve Him.”

Luke 24.50: Now, He [Jesus] led them forth out as far as Bethany [“House of Unripe Figs”, a village on the southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives, about two miles east of Jerusalem] and raising up His hands, He eulogesen [fine spoke, commended, blessed, praised] them. And it was caused to be in His eulogein of them, He withdrew from them. And they, proskunesantes [having worshipped], Him, returned into Jerusalem amidst megales [big, large, huge, great] joy and were via all [continually] in the Temple ainountes [praising] and eulogountes Theos. Amen!

Hebrews 1.8: And again (when He [Theos] brings the First-born [Jesus] into the oikoumenen [habitable land]), He says, “Let all the aggeloi of Theos proskunsatosan Him.”

Matthew 2.9: Now, having listened to the King, they [the magi] departed. And LO! the star which they saw in the east led them forward until, coming, it stood above at which place the Child was. Now, seeing the star, they vehemently rejoiced megalen joy. And coming into the dwelling, they saw the Child with Mary His mother. And falling down, they proskunesan Him. And opening their treasure chests, they tendered to Him presents, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 14.28: Now, answering Him, Rock said, “Kurie! if You are My Lord, order me to come to You upon the waters.” Now, He said, “Come!” And descending from the sailboat, Rock walked all around upon the waters to come to Jesus. But seeing the powerful wind, he was [became] frightened and beginning to sink, he ekraze [cawed as a raven, shrieked, screamed, cried out], saying, “Kurie! soson [make safe, save] me!” Now, Jesus (stretching out His hand) directly seized him and says to him, “Oligopiste [Puny faith]! why did you vacillate?” And they embarking into the sailboat, the wind slackened. Now, coming to Him, we in the sailboat proskunesan [worshipped] Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of Theos.”

John 4.19: The gune [woman] said to Him, “Kurie! I perceive that You are a prophetes [before teller, prophet]. Our forefathers prosekunesan [worshiped] on this mountain but You Jews say that Jerusalem is the only place where it is proper proskunein [to worship].” Jesus said to her, “Gunai! pisteuson [have faith] in Me that a time is coming when you proskunesete [will worship] the Father neither merely on this mountain nor merely in Jerusalem. You Samaritans don't know whom you proskuneite [are worshipping]. We Jews do know Whom We proskunoumen for (after all) soteria [rescue, safety, salvation] comes emergent from the Jews. But a time is coming (indeed, it already is here) when the genuine proskunetai proskunesousi [will worship] the Father in pneumati [spirit] and in truth for the Father seeks just such people (as these) proskunountas [to worship] Him. Theos is a Pneuma [Spirit] Being and those proskunountas Him proskunein [must worship] in pneumati and in truth.”

End of Fifty-third Lesson
