Lesson 68 Amplified – APOSTOLOS

 APOSTOLOS -- APOSTOLOI

American singular: delegate, ambassador, apostle

plural: delegates, ambassadors, apostles

Originally Jesus chose twelve men to be His apostoloi. Judas the Greater [the older], Son of Simon the Iscariot [Keriothite; i.e. from Kerioth] surrendered/betrayed Jesus to the leaders of the Judaeans. The apostoloi chose (by casting a lot) Mathias to replace Judas the betrayer but after his being chosen, he is never again mentioned in the New Blood Covenant. Paul [nee Saul] of Tarsus, Cilicia, writes that he is the twelfth apostolos.

Almost Greek [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

Luke 6.12: Now it was caused to be (in those days) that He went forth into the Mount of Olives proseuchomai [to humbly beg of God, to pray]. And He was staying up the whole of the night in proseuche of Theos. And when it was caused to be day, He called to His mathetai and He selected from them two and ten [twelve] whom He also named apostoloi.

Galatians 1.11: Now, I make known to you, brothers, the euaggelion euaggelisthen under me that it is not down [according] to man. For I not received it from man nor was I taught by man; conversely, via a revelation of Jesus, the Christou [Anointed One, Mashiyach, Messiah, Christ]. For you heard of my way of life (when in Judaism), that with surpassing zeal I persecuted the ekklesia [assembly, church] of Theos; ravaged it and progressed in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my race [Jews], being more superabundantly a zealot of my ancestral traditions. Now, at the time, it pleased Theos (He separating me emergent from my mother’s belly and calling me via His charitos [graciousness]) to reveal His Son (in me) in order that I might euaggelizoeai Him in [among] the ethnoi [nations, races, non-Jews, gentiles]. I not conferred with flesh and blood nor did I go up to Jerusalem to the chosen-before-me apostoloi; conversely, I went immediately away into Arabia [east of Damascus, Syria; now Iraq] and later returned (again) to Damascus.                                                                    Then, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to learn from Rock [some texts use “Cephas,” which is Latin for “Rock”; Jesus renamed him “Kaf”, which is Chaldee for “Rock”; in Greek “Rock” is “Petros”; an American transliteration of “Petros” is “Peter”] and remained by his side for fifteen days. But I not saw any of the others of the apostoloi except James Bar Joseph, the half-brother of the Kuriou.

1st Corinthians 4.9: For I think that Theos sent us out (the apostoloi) last (as doomed to death) because we were caused to be a theatron [spectacle, theater] to the kosmos, to angeloi and to men.

1st Corinthians 12.28: And (in fact) whom did Theos place in the ekklesia? Firstly apostolous, secondly prophetas [before tellers, prophets], thirdly teachers, then works of dunameis [force, power], then charismata [gifts, endowments, faculties, deliverances] of healing, relief [help], pilotage [leadership], kin [families] of glossai.

Acts 5.17: Now standing up, the high priest and all those with him (this being the party [sect] of the Sadducees) were filled of zelos [heat: zeal, ardor; jealousy, envy, malice] and throwing their hands upon the apostoloi, they also publicly put them in custody. But via night, an angelos of the Kurios opened the door of the keep [jail] and leading them forth, said, “Go! and standing in the Temple, speak [preach] to the people all the rhemai [utterances] of this Life.” Now having heard [heeding], they entered into the Temple (at dawn) and taught.
