CHRESTOTES
American: usefulness (excellence
in character or demeanor)
CHRESTOS
American: useful
EUCHRESTOS
American: useful
It is instructive for us to note that the New Blood Covenant primarily uses words for usefulness in place of words for goodness when referring to the quality of a person. The Lord Jesus also chose the word in a parable: “good and useful servant.” May we assume that “the best that we can be” is useful to or in the Kingdom of God?
Almost Greek: (Words in italics are translator’s additions)
1st Corinthians 15.33: Do not be led astray! Kakia [Worthless] companionship morally shrivels chresth [useful] habits. Be aroused to fair deeds and not to hamartanete [missing the goal or mark, erring, offending, sinning] for some of you have ignorance of Theos. I relate this for your shame.
Romans 2: Therefore, you are without excuse, O man, all of you krinon [distinguishing, deciding, judging, putting on trial] for in what you krineis in another person, you condemn yourself for you condemning practice the same offenses. Now, we know that the krima [decision, judgment rendered, verdict] of Theos is down [according] to truth upon those who indeed practice these offenses. Do you think this, O man (you krinon upon those indeed practicing these offenses and yet doing them yourself), that you will escape the krima of Theos? Or do you despise the wealth of the chrestotetos, the tolerance and the forbearance of Theos; not knowing that the chreston of Theos leads you to metanoian [thinking differently, turning about 180 degrees, repenting]? But because of your skleroteta [callous, hard] and impenitent heart, you are accumulating for yourself orgen [violent passion, fury, rage, wrath] in a day of orges and a revelation of the dikaiokarisias [right judgment] of Theos, Who will give to each one down [according] to his work.
“There isn’t a dikaios one; not even one. There isn’t one comprehending. There isn’t one seeking Theos. All turned away; together achreioo [rendered useless]. Not one is doing chrestoteta [usefulness]; not even one is.
PSALMS 14.1: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God!” They corruptly acted. They hatefully did. In deeds none is doing good. YaHWeH looked down from Heaven upon the sons of Adam, to see if there was (any) being intelligent and seeking God. All turn off together. They are turning corrupt. None is doing good, not even one!
Romans cont.: An opened
grave is their larugx [throat,
larynx]. With their glossais [tongues, languages] they are
deceitful. Venom of asps is under
their lips whose mouth is full of curses and bitterness. Their feet are keen to shed blood. Destruction and
wretchedness are in their path, and
they not knew the path of peace. Fear of Theos isn’t from in front of their
eyes.
Romans 11.11: I say then, didn’t they trip [stumble, err] in order that they fall? Not let it be caused to be! Conversely, by their paraptomati [unintentional sideslips, lapses, deviations] came soteria [rescue, safety, salvation] to the ethnesin [nations, races, non-Jews, gentiles] to provoke them to jealousy. But if their paraptomati be wealth to the kosmou [universe, world, cosmos] and their deterioration [failure] be wealth to the ethnon, think how much more wealth their completion will be! In fact, I am apostolos [delegate, ambassador, apostle] over the ethnon, therefore, I speak to you, the ethnon. I glorify my service if (somehow) I may make my own flesh [race] jealous and soso [may make safe, may save] some emergent from them. For if their rejection be exchange [restoration] to the kosmou, what will their admission be if not life emergent from the dead. Now, if the first fruits be hagia, the swelling mass of dough also is. And if a root is hagia, the branches also are holy. Now, if some of the branches were excised and you (a wild olive tree) were engrafted into them and you were caused to be a sharer in the richness of the root of the olive tree, not exult against the excised branches. But if you do exult against the excised branches, remember that the root sustains you, not conversely, you sustain the root. You will say then, “Branches were excised in order that I might be engrafted. ”Rightly [more correctly], they were excised for apistia [faithlessness] and by pistei [faith in, reliance upon] you stand. Not be arrogant! conversely fear, for if Theos not spared the natural branches, lest somehow neither will He spare you. Know then the chrestoteta and decisiveness [rigor] of Theos (upon those {in fact} having fallen, rigor, but to you, chrestoteta), provided that you remain in the chrestoteti. Otherwise, you also will be cut off and if they do not remain apistia, they will be engrafted for Theos has the dunatos [force, power] again to engraft them. For if you (emergent from nature) were cut off the wild olive tree and (against nature) were engrafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more likely are these natural branches to be engrafted into their own olive tree?
Colossians 3.12: Accordingly, dress yourself in the manner of the chosen of Theos: hagioi [holy, sacred, consecrated] and egapemenoi [unconditionally loved], splen [spleen, guts, bowels, sympathy] of pity, chrestoteta, humility, gentleness, forbearance; enduring one another and forgiving yourselves.
Philemon 8: Therefore, having much directness [boldness] in the Christo to order [command] you to do the proper thing because of agapen, I rather parakalo [to call near, to invite, to urge, to exhort, to encourage, to solace] you to do it. Being of this sort (just now an old man and a captive of Jesus the Christou) I, Paul, parakalo you concerning my child Onesimus [“Profitable”], the one at one time achrelos [useless] to you but now euchreston to you and to me) whom I procreated in my bonds.
Luke 6.27: “Accordingly, to you (those hearing) I say, ‘Agapate your echthrous [hater, enemy]. Do well to those detesting you. Eulogeite [fine speak, commend, bless, praise] those cursing you and proseuchesthe [humbly beg of God; pray] over those insulting [slandering] you. To those thumping you on the left jaw, also present the other side. And those taking from you your outer garment, also not deny them your shirt. Now, to all asking of you, give and from those taking away yours, don’t demand them back. And just as you wish men to do to you, you also similarly do to them. And if you agapete those agapontas you, what sort of charis [graciousness] is due to you? for hamartoloi also agapontas them. And if you do well to those doing well to you, what sort of charis is due to you? for hamartoloi do the same. And if you loan near [to] whom you elpizete [expect, hope] to receive in full, what sort of charis is due to you? for hamartoloi also lend to hamartoloi in order that they may receive similar in full. Rather agapete your echthrous [haters, enemies] and do well and lend, fully expecting not even one cent in return and many wages will be accruing to you and you will be sons of the Highest because He is chrestos to the ungrateful and the ponerous [hurtful]. Accordingly, be caused to be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. Not krinete [distinguish, judge, put on trial] and you won’t at all be krithete. Not katadiazete [condemn] and you won’t at all be katadiskasthete. Fully free and you will be fully freed. Give and it will be given to you, kalon [beautiful, virtuous] measure (shaken and tamped and piled over the top) shall they give into your bosom for in the same measure by which you measure out will gifts be meted out to you.’”
2nd Timothy 2.14: Quietly remind them of these truths, attesting before the face of the Kuriou not to logomachein [debate over words], this being serviceable to not even one thing [this is useless] towards [can result in] put down to those hearing. Hurry to present yourself approved to Theos, an unashamed worker, accurately analyzing the logon of truth but remain aloof from worldly, empty babbling. In addition, it causes advancement of ungodliness and their logos feeds [spreads] like gangrene (emergent from which are Hymenaeus [“Marriage”] and Philetus [“Amiable”]), who miss the mark or goal concerning the truth, saying that even now the anastasin [standing up again, resurrection] has come and they have overturned the pistin of some. nevertheless, the solid [stable] foundation of Theos stands, having this seal: “The Kurios knew those being His,” and “Let everyone naming the name of the Christou desert [rebel] from injustice.” Now, in a big house there aren’t only vessels of gold and silver but also wooden and earthen vessels; also, some to timen [value, esteem] and some to disgrace. Accordingly, if any thoroughly cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel to timen, hagiasmenon [having been made holy, having been sanctified] and euchreston to the Despote [Despot, Master] having been prepared to every good work. Now, flee juvenile lusts but pursue dikaiosunen [equity, justification, rightness], pistin, agapen and peace. Be with those calling upon the Kuriou emergent from a clean heart but shun stupid and uninstructed speculations, knowing that they procreate battles. It behooves a slave of the Kuriou not to war; conversely, to be affable toward everyone; instructive, forbearing, in gentleness training those opposing him in order that perhaps Theos may give them metanoian [reversal, repentance, compunction] to a recognition of the truth and they may regain their senses emergent from the trap of the diabolou [leader to shame, devil, satyr], having been captured under him to do his thelema [determination, choice, decision, decree].
2nd Timothy 4.9: Directly make haste to come toward me for Demas deserted me. He egapesas the present age and has traveled to Thessalonica, Macedonia. Crescens [“Increasing”] went into Galatia, Asia Minor. Titus [“Honorable”] went into Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Pick up John Mark and bring him with you for he is euchrestos to me to [for] service. I sent out Tychicus [“Chance”] to Ephesus, Asia Minor. Coming, bear [bring] the outer garment which I left with Carpus in Troas, Mysia and the biblia [rolls, scrolls, books]; especially the parchments. Alexander [“Man-Defender”], the coppersmith, showed to me much kakia [worthlessness]. The Kurios will give away to him down to his works. You also greatly be on guard against him for he opposed our logois [words]. In my first apologia [defense], not even one man was present with me, but all deserted me. (May it not be charged to them!) But the Kurios stood beside me and empowered me in order that via me, the kerugma [proclamation] might be fully carried out and all the ethne might hear. I was rescued emergent from the mouth of the lion. The Kurios will also rescue me from all ponerou [hurtful] work and sosei [will make safe, will save] me into His above the sky [heavenly] kingdom, to Whom be glory to the ages of the ages. Amen!
Titus 3: Quietly remind them to subordinate themselves to chiefs and authorities (to submit to authority), to be ready toward all good work (vilifying not even one person), to be amachous [without-fighting, peaceable], all appropriate [moderate], showing gentleness toward all men. For we were also once without understanding, unpersuadable, caused to stray, slaving for lusts and motley sensual pleasures, passing time in kakia [worthlessness] and ill-will; stugetoi [hateful], misountes [hating] one another. But chrestotes and philanthropia [love of mankind] shone forth from Abba Theos, our Soteros [defender, savior], not emergent from works of dikaiosune which we had done but down to his compassion, He esosen [made safe, saved] us via bathing of spiritual rebirth and renovation of the Hagios Pneuma, Whom He copiously poured forth upon us via Jesus, the Christou (our Soteros) in order that dikaiothentes [being justified] by that charity [graciousness], we might be caused to be heirs down to the elpida [expectation, hope] of eternal life. The logos is pistos [trustworthy, faithful] and I boulomai [will, resolve, intend] you to thoroughly affirm about these truths in order that those pepisteukotes [having faith] in Theos may think of kalon works over which to preside [to practice]. These endeavors are kala and helpful to men. But stay aloof from stupid speculations, tracing by generations, quarrelling and battling of law for these are anopheleis [useless] and empty. Avoid a heretic [schismatic, divider] amidst [after] one and a second warning, knowing that such a one has been perverted and hamartanei [misses the mark or goal; errs, offends, sins], being self-condemned.
1st Peter 2: Accordingly, putting away all kakian [worthlessness], all dolon [decoying, trickery], all hupokriseis [deceit, hypocrisy] and all phthonous [ill will, spite] and all defamation, as newborn infants yearn for true logikon [logical, rational] milk in order that you may grow in it; if perhaps you have tasted that the Kurios is chrestos. Drawing near to Him (a living Stone), (in fact) under men having been rejected, but in the proximity [sight] of Theos, select [elect] -- precious. You also, as living stones, are being constructed into a spiritual dwelling, a hagion, priestly fraternity, to offer up spiritual sacrifices well-received by Theos via Jesus, the Christou. For this is also included in the Graphe [Scripture, part of Old Testament]: “LO! I place in Zion an elect, precious Cornerstone. The one pisteuon [having faith] upon Him shan’t at all be shamed down.”
Matthew 11.28: [Jesus speaking] Come here To Me! all feeling fatigue and being burdened, and I will refresh you. Take upon yourself My yoke and learn from Me because I AM gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest to your psuchais [soul, life, psyche, ego]. My yoke is chrestos and My phortion [bill of lading, task, service] is light.”
