Lesson 96 Amplified -- NOMIKOS

 NOMIKOS

American singular: an expert on Mosaic Law, a lawyer

NOMIKOI

American plural: experts on Mosaic Law, lawyers

As in America today, perhaps there were a superfluous number of lawyers in the biblical middle east as well.

Almost Greek: (Words in italics are translator’s additions)

Luke 7.28: [Jesus speaking] “For I say, not even one in [of] those born of woman is a larger [greater] prophetes [before teller, prophet] than John the Baptistes but the mikroteros [small] one in the Kingdom of Theos is greater than he is.”

And all the people hearing this statement and the tax-farmers acknowledged the edikaiosan [justification] of Theos, baptisthentes [having been immersed, having been submerged, having been baptized] with the baptisma of John but the Pharisees and the nomikoi set aside [rejected] the counsel [advice] of Theos to themselves, not baptisthentes [were baptized] by him.

Luke 10.25: A certain nomikos stood up to thoroughly test Him and said,

“Teacher! what may I do to inherit eternal life?”

Now, He said to him,

“What has been written in The Law? How do you read?”

Now, answering, He said,

“You shall agapeseis [unconditionally love] the Kurion [Lord. Master] your Theos emergent from the whole of your heart and emergent from the whole of your psuches [soul, life, psych, ego] and emergent from the whole of your strength and emergent from the whole of your mind and your neighbor in that way which you agape yourself.”

DEUTERONOMY 6.5: [Moses speaking] Hear! O Israel! YHWH is our Elohiym [Triune God]. YHWH is first. You shall awhab [phile, love] YHWH, your Elohiym with the whole of your heart and with the whole of your nephesh [psuche] and with the whole of your energy.

LEVITICUS 19.18: [YHWH speaking] “... and you shall awhab your associate as you love yourself.”

[Jesus continues] Now, He said to him,

“You correctly answered. Do this and you will LIVE!”

Luke 11.45: Now answering, one of the nomikon says to Him,

“Teacher! saying these words, you also abuse us.”

And He said,

“And to you, nomikois, woe! because you burden men with oppressive burdens and you (yourselves) not (with even one of your fingers) touch the burdens. Woe to you! because you construct the tombs of the propheton but your forefathers slew them. Consequently, you are witnesses of and approve of the works of your forefathers because in fact they slew them, but you construct their tombs [bury them out of sight or hide their messages?]. Also, via this, the wisdom of Theos said,

‘I will send forth to them prophetas and apostolous and emergent from them, they will slay and drive off in order that may be demanded of this generation the blood of all the propheton poured forth from the founding of the kosmou [universe, world, cosmos]; from the blood of Abel [“Breath”] up to the blood of Zecharyah [“YHWH Remembers”], who perished amidst [between] the altar and the House of God [“Hagios of Hagioi”].

Yes! I say to you, it shall be demanded of this generation. Woe to you nomikois! because you took away the key of [to] the knowledge; you not entered yourselves and those having entered, you estopped.”

Luke 14: And it was caused to be, in His going into a house of one of the chiefs of the Pharisees to eat bread on a sabbath and they were aside examining Him. And LO! some man was dropsical [bloated] before Him. And asking, Jesus spoke toward the Pharisee nomikous, saying,
“Is it legal to cure on the sabbath?”Now, they kept silent. And taking hold of him, He cured him and fully freed him. And beginning to speak toward them, He said,
“Which one of you whose ass or ox should fall into a pit, and he doesn’t immediately pull it out in the sabbath?”
And they hadn’t the forcefulness to debate Him about this.

Titus 3.12: If ever I dispatch Artemas [in Greek: “Gift of Artemis”; Roman: “Gift of Diana”] or Tychicus [“Fortuitous”] to replace you, hurry to come to me into Nikopolis [“Victorious City”], Macedonia for I have decided to winter there. Diligently support Zenas [“Jove Given”] the nomikon and Apollos in order that they lack not even one thing. Let our people learn to preside over [to practice] good works to needed use [needs] in order that they may not be without fruit.

Matthew 22.34: But the Pharisees, hearing that He muzzled the Sadducees, were assembled together with Him and one of them (a nomikos) questioned Him, testing Him and saying,

“Teacher! which one of the commands is megale [big, large, huge, great] in The Law?”

And Jesus said to him,

“‘You shall agapeseis the Kurion your Theos in [with] all your heart and in all your psuche and in all your deep thought [understanding].’ This is the first and the megale command.”

“But the second is like it: ‘You shall agapeseis [unconditionally love] your neighbor whom how you love yourself.’ In these two commands hang the whole of The Law and the Prophets [Old Testament].”
