Lesson 5 Amplified -- CHRISTOS

CHRISTOS

American: Anointed One, Messiah, Christ

Hebrew Aramaic: Mashiyach

The American word “Messiah” is a transliteration of the Hebrew Aramaic word “Mashiyach”.

Almost Greek: [Words in italics are translator’s additions.]

Luke 2.8: And in the same territory there were shepherds camping out and keeping guard (in the night) over their flock. And LO! an aggelos [messenger, angel] of the Kuriou stood before them and the glory of the Kuriou illuminated all around them, making it as light as day. And they feared with megan [big, large, huge, great] fear and the aggelos said to them, “Not fear for LO! I euaggelizouai [announce good news] to you of megalen joy which will be to all the people because on the [this] day was born to you a Soter [deliverer, savior] who is the Christos (the Kurios) in the City of David. And this is a sign to you. You will find a baby (having been swathed in burial strips) lying in a manger.” And suddenly there were caused to be (with the aggelos) a throng of the heavenly army praising Theos and saying, “Glory in the Highest [Heaven] to Theos and upon the earth, peace in [among] men of His satisfaction.” And it was caused to be (as the aggelos went off from them into Ouranon [Heaven]) that the men (also the shepherds) said to one another, “Now let us traverse up to Bethlehem and let us see this rhema [word from God] (having been caused to be) which the Kurios has made known to us.” And they speedily came and found out both Mary and Joseph and the Baby lying in a manger. Now seeing, they told abroad the utterance spoken to them about this Child. And all those hearing marveled concerning the words spoken (toward them) through the shepherds.

Luke 2.25: And LO! there was a man (in Jerusalem) whose name was Simeon [“Hearing”] and this man was dikaios [equitable, just, right] and pious, confidently awaiting the solace of Israel. And the Hagios Pneuma was upon him, and it was spoken via oracle to him (through the Hagios Pneuma) that he wasn’t to see death before he sees the Christon of the Kuriou. And he came (in the Hagios Pneuma) into the Temple. And when His parents introduced the Child Jesus into the Temple (they doing down [according] to the custom of The Law concerning Him) and he [Simeon] received Him into his arms and he eulogemene [fine spoke, commended, blessed, praised] Theos and said, “Now fully free your slave, Despota [Despot; absolute ruler], (down to Your rhema), in shalom [safety, peace, health, happiness, prosperity, friendship], because my eyes have seen Your Soterion which [Whom] You prepared down [before] the face of all the peoples; a light to disclosure [revelation] to the ethnon [races, non-Jews, Gentiles] and a glory of Your people Israel.”

ISAIAH 42.6 [YHWH speaking] “... Illumination of gowy [ethnoi], to open blind eyes,”

Luke 4.40: Now the sun sinking [going down], everyone (as many as had feeble ones with motley maladies) led them to Him. Now, He (imposing His hands upon each one of them in turn) healed them. Now, demons issued forth from many, shrieking and saying, “YOU ARE the Christos; the Son of Theos.” And admonishing them, He not permitted them to speak because they knew Him to be the Christon.

Luke 9.18: And it was caused to be (in His proseuchomenon [humbly begging God, praying] alone) that His mathetai [learners, pupils, disciples] were in company with Him and He questioned them, saying, “Whom do the throngs say Me to be?” Now answering, they said, “Some say John Bar Zacharias the Baptizer, but others say Elijah; but others that some prophetes [prophets] of the ancients stood up again.” Now He said to them, “Now Whom do you say Me to be?” Now answering, Rock said, “The Christon of Theos.”

Matthew 16.13: Jesus asking, “Whom do men say Me, the Son of Man, to be?” And they [the apostles] said, “Some say John the Baptistes, but others say Elijah but still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophetes He says to them, “But Whom do YOU say Me to be?” Now responding, Simon the Rock said, “YOU ARE the Christos, the Son of the Living Theos!” And (responding) Jesus said, “Supremely blest are you, Simon bar Jonah, because flesh and blood not disclosed this truth to you; conversely, My Father in the Ouranoi.”
