METANOIA

American: reversal, repentance, compunction

Hebrew Aramaic: nocham 

Can you recall how often you have seen signs saying “repent” in cartoons and in the grandstands at sporting events? To persons who have never read the Bible (maybe even some of those who have read the Bible), the word must be puzzling. In the biblical context it means to do an “about face”. That is, starting with one’s back to Theos, turnabout to face Him.

2nd Corinthians 7.9: Now I am joyful (not that you were grieved); conversely, that you were grieved to metanoian. For you grieved down to the choice of Theos in order that you might not be injured in even one word emergent from me. For sadness down to the choice of Theos works metanoian to irrevocable soterian [rescue, safety; salvation]  but worldly sadness fully works out death. Notice this same issue (for you to be grieved down to the choice of Theos), how much it fully worked out (in you) spouden [speed, alacrity, eagerness], also apologian [a plea, giving an account, a defense], also indignation, also fear, also a longing, also zelon [heat: zeal, ardor], also retribution! 

2nd Corinthians 12.21: I fear lest my Theos again humble me (with you) at my coming and that I shall grieve over many of those having previously done hamartia [a miss of the mark, goal; offense, sin] and not metanoesanton over the impurity and poneria [depravity] and licentiousness that they have practiced. 

Romans 2.4: Or do you despise the wealth of the chrestotetos [usefulness], the tolerance and the forbearance of Theos; not knowing that the chreston of Theos leads you to metanoian? But because of your skleroteta [callous, hard] and impenitent heart, you are accumulating for yourself orgen [violent passion, fury, rage, wrath] in a day of orges and a revelation of the dikaiokarisias [righteos judgment] of Theos, Who will give to each one down [according] to his work. 

Luke 13.2: And answering, Jesus said to them, “Do you think those Galileans were caused to be hamartoloi beyond all the Galileans because they suffered these executions? I say to you no! conversely, unless you metanoete you will all perish likewise. Or those ten and eight [eighteen] in Siloam (upon whom the tower fell, killing them), do you think that they were debtors beyond all the men residing in Jerusalem? I say to you no! conversely, unless you metanoete you will all perish likewise.” 

Luke 15.7: [Jesus speaking] I say to you (in the same way) there is caused to be joy in the face of the aggelon [messengers, angels] of Theos over one hamartolo [one missing the mark; sinner; criminal] metanounti.” 

Acts 19.4: Now Paul said, “John (in fact) ebaptise [immersed, submerged, baptized]  a baptisma of metanoias for hamartia to the people, saying that they should pisteusosi [have reliance, have faith] into the One coming after him; that is into Jesus the Christou.” Now hearing this, they were ebaptisthesan into the Name of the Kuriou Jesus. 

Hebrews 12.14: Pursue peace and hagiasmon [holiness, purity] with everyone (without which not even one person will see the Kuriou) diligently watching out lest any lack from the charitos [graciousness, gratitude] of Theos; lest any root of bitterness growing up, disturb and via this many be defiled; lest, there be in your midst any pornos [male prostitute] or profane one, as Esau (who gave up his birthright for one feeding). For (in fact) you know that afterwards (desiring to inherit the eulogian [fine speaking, commendation, blessing, eulogy]), he was rejected for he not found room for metanoias (though seeking it with tears). 

Matthew 4.17: From then is when Jesus began kerussein [to proclaim, to herald] and to say, “Metanoeite! for the Kingdom of the Ouranon has come near [arrived].”
