Lesson 49 Amplified -- SEMEION

SEMEION -- SEMEIA

American singular: sign, indication; plural: signs, indications

Hebrew Aramaic singular: owth

Our Lord Jesus was constantly confronted by the Judaeans asking Him for a sign that would convince them that He was God. He never relented.

Almost Greek: (Words in italics are translator’s additions)

2nd Corinthians 12.11: I have been caused to be mindless, boasting. You compelled me for I ought to be commended by you. For in not even one way was I inferior to the highest apostolon [delegates, ambassadors, apostles], even though I am not even one thing [am nothing]. Indeed, the semeion of a true apostolou were fully worked out in you in all cheerful endurance through semeiois and prodigies [omens] and dunamesi [power works].

Luke 11.29: Now, the throngs assembling, He [Jesus] began to speak, “This generation is more wicked. It seeks a semeion and a semeion won’t be given to it, if not [except] the semeion of Jonah [“Dove”] the prophetou [before teller, prophet]. For just as Jonah was caused to be a semeion to the Ninevites, the Son of Man will also be the same to this generation.

Luke 21.10 Then, He said to them, “Ethnos [nation, race, non-Jews, Gentiles]will rise up against ethnos and kingdom against kingdom; both megaloi [big, large, huge, great] earthquakes down to place [from place to place] and there will be famines and plagues; there will be both great terrors and great semeia from Ouranou [Heaven].

Acts 2.14: But Rock (standing with the eleven) raised up his phonen [sound, tone, noise, voice] and plainly enunciated [declared] to them, “Men! Jews! and all those inhabiting Jerusalem, let this be known to you and take into your ear [listen to] my rhemata [utterances]. For these men aren’t intoxicated as you assume for it is merely the third hour of the day [9 AM]. But this is that even being spoken via the prophetou Joel: ‘And it shall be in the final days,’ says Theos, ‘I will pour forth (from My Pneuma [Spirit]) upon all flesh and your sons and daughters propheteusousin [will before tell, will speak under inspiration, will prophesy] and your youths will stare wide-eyed at visions and your elders will dream dreams. And in those days (upon My male slaves and upon My female slaves), I will pour forth from My Pneuma and they also propheteusousi [will prophesy]. And I will give terata [wonders, miracles] in the ourano [sky, heavens] above and semeia upon the earth below; blood and fire and mist of smoke. The sunshine will be changed to shadowiness [an eclipse] and the moon into blood [an eclipse] prior to the coming of the megalen and notable Day of the Kuriou. And it shall be that all (whoever epikalesetai [calls out to, appeals to, invokes] the name [authority] of the Kuriou) sothesetai [will be rescued, will be saved].’”

JOEL 2.28 “… afterward It will be, I will pour forth My Ruwach [Pneuma] upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will naba [prophetueo]. Your old will dream dreams. Your youths will see visions. And in those days (on both My male slaves and My female slaves), I will pour forth My Ruwach. I will give mopheth [terata] in the sky and on the earth, blood and fire and timarah [pillars, columns] of smoke. The sun will be turned over to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of YHWH. For it will be that all who qara [epikalesetai: call out to, appeal to, invoke] the name of YHWH will malat [be smooth, slippery, escape] for in Mount Tsijon [Zion] and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance,” as YHWH has said, “and deliverance among the survivors to whom YHWH shall call out.”

Acts 5.12: Now, semeia and terata were caused to be in many people via the hands of the apostolon and they were all homothumadon [unanimous, with one mind] in the Temple’s Porch of Solomon. Now, of the remaining ones, not even one dared to be joined to them, conversely, the people magnified [declared great] them. Now, more were added, throngs both of men and of gunaikon [women], pisteuontes [putting their faith in] the Kurio, such that they carried out the strengthless and placed them upon couches and upon mattresses down the wide plats [places] in order that (while he was coming [passing]) Rock’s shadow might overshadow some of those.

Matthew12.38: Then is when some of the grammateis [writers, recorders, scribes, secretaries] and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher! we want to see a semeion from You.” But responding, He said to them, “A ponera [hurtful] and moichalis [adulterous] generation seeks a semeion and a semeion shan’t be given to it, except the semeion of the prophetou Jonah.
