Lesson 108 Amplified -- CONSOLATION

In Amplified Lesson 32, we studied paraklesis from its other aspect; imploration, urging, exhortation. Here we consider only the “comforting” aspect of this Koine Greek word. 

Almost Greek: (Words in italics are translator’s additions.) 

1st Thessalonians 2: For you yourselves know our entrance to you, brothers, that it hasn’t been empty. Even though having undergone hardship before in Philippi, Macedonia as you know, we were bold in our Theos to speak to you the euaggelion [good news, gospel, evangel] of Theos in much anguish. For our paraklesis wasn’t of error nor of impurity nor deceit but as we have been approved by Theos to be entrusted with the euaggelion, so we speak; not as pleasing men but Theos, the One testing our hearts. For neither were we then in logos of flattery (as you know) not with motive of avarice (Theos is Witness) nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others) being able to be burdened as apostoloi [delegates, ambassadors, apostles] of the Christos [Anointed One, Messiah, Christ]. We were gentle in your midst as a nurse brooding her own children. Longing for you so and having such warm feelings for you, I shared with you not only the euaggelion of Theos but also my own psuche [soul, life, psyche, ego] because you have been caused to be agapetoi [unconditionally loved] to me. For you remembered my labor pains, brothers, working night and day not to put a burden on anyone of you, I ekeruxamen [proclaimed, heralded] to you the euaggelion of Theos. You and Theos are witnesses as to how pious, dikaios [equitable, just, right] and faultless I was to those pisteuousin [relying upon, having faith in], even as you know how I parakalountes [called near, invited, urged, exhorted, encouraged] you and paramuthoumenoi and testified to each of one you (as a father to his own children) that you walk appropriately to Theos, the One calling you into His kingdom and glory. 

1st Thessalonians 4.13: I don’t want you to be ignorant with respect to those sleeping [having passed on], lest you grieve as also the rest do, not having elpis [expectation, hope]. For if we pisteuo that Jesus died and stood up again, so Theos will also bring with Him [Jesus] those who have been put to sleep via Jesus. For this we say to you (in a logos of the Kurios), that we (remaining living until the coming of the Kurios) not (in no way) may go ahead of those having been put to sleep because the Kurios Himself will descend from the ouranos [the sky, the heavens] in a rallying cry in the phone [sound, tone, noise, voice] of an archaggelos [chief messenger, chief angel] and with a trumpet of Theos. And first the dead in the Christos will stand up again, then the living will be caught up together with them (in the cloudiness) to a meeting of the Kurios in the air. And so, we will always be with the Kurios. So also parakaleite one another with these logoi. 

1st Corinthians 14: Pursue agapen! Crave the spiritual and even more, (in order) that you may propheteuete [speak under inspiration, prophesy]. For he, speaking in a glosse [tongue, language], not speaks to men; conversely, to Theos. For no man spiritually hears but he speaks musterion [secrets, mysteries]. But the one propheteuon speaks to men, for building up, paraklesin and paramuthian.

 

2nd Corinthians 1.3: Adored be the Theos and Father of our Kuriou Jesus the Christou, the Father of oiktirmon [pity] and the Theos of all parakleseos; the One parakalon us [me] (over all our [my] stress) for us [me] to be able to parakalein those in every kind of stress via the parakleseos of which we ourselves are [I myself am] parakaloumetha by Theos. Just as He causes the sufferings of the Christou to super-abound in us [me], so via the Christou our [my] paraklesis super-abounds. Now if we are [I am] stressed, it’s for your parakleseos and soterias [rescue, safety, salvation], being effective in the cheerful enduring of the same sufferings which we [I] also suffer; and our [my] elpis is firm for you, knowing that as you are koinonoi [sharers, partners] of the suffering, so also koinonoi of the parakleseos. For I want you not to be ignorant, Brothers, as to our [my] stress having happened to us [me] in Asia Minor. For we were [I was] excessively weighed down (beyond my dunamin [force, power] to bear up) as to put us [me] utterly at a loss even how to live [survive]. Conversely, we [I myself] have the sentence of death in myself in order that we [I] shouldn't convince [rely upon] ourselves [myself]; conversely, to rely upon Theos (the One awakening the dead) Who rescued us [me] emergent from so great a death as this (and still does [continues to] rescue me) and in Whom we [I] elpikamen [have expectation, have hope] that (even yet) He will rescue me; you also co-working with us [me] in deesie [petition, request, prayer] in order that (emergent from many faces) eucharistethe [thanks to Theos] may be expressed via many for us [me] for our [my] charisma [gift, endowment, faculty; deliverance] from the Father.

 

2nd Corinthians 7.5: For even when I came into Macedonia, our [my] flesh hadn’t rest; conversely, we were [I was] crowded [distressed] in every way; externally battles, internally fears. Conversely, Theos, the One parakalon the depressed, parekalesen us [me] by the return of Titus, and not only by his return; conversely, the paraklesei with which he was pareklethe over your telling us of your longing for, your mourning for, your zelon [heat, zeal, ardor] for me, causes me to be more joyful.

 

Colossians 4.10: Aristarchus [“Best Ruler”], my co-prisoner, hugs you. As to Bar Nabas’ cousin, John Mark, over whom you received commands [instructions], receive him if he comes to you and receive Jesus (the one called Justus). These are the only co-laborers for the Kingdom of Theos (who are from the circumcised) who were caused to be paregoria.

 

Philippians 2: Accordingly, if there is any paraklesis in the Christo, if any paramuthion of agapes, if any koinonia of the Hagios Pneuma, if any splen [spleen, guts, bowels, sympathy] and splagchna [more intense splen, pity]; make my joy complete in order that you think the same [are of one mind]; having the same agapen, sumpsuchoi [one in psuche], one in thinking [opinion]. Not do even one thing down to intrigue, nor empty glorying; conversely, in humility consider one another superior to yourselves, not each seeing to his own interests but also each the other’s. For think in yourselves [have this attitude] which also is in Jesus the Christo, Who, coming into being in the shape [form] of Theos, not regarded equality with Theos to be plundered [seized] but emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave (being caused to be in resemblance of men). In figure, being found (in that manner) a man, He humbled Himself being caused to be submissive even so far as death (even the death of the stake). Therefore, Theos also raised Him to the highest position and gave to Him a name [authority] above every name, in order that in the name of Jesus everyone should bow (heavenly, earthly and katachthonion [subterranean, underworld or Hades]) and every glossa [tongue] should acknowledge that Jesus the Christos is Kurios to the glory of Theos the Father.

 

Luke 16.19: “Now, there was a certain man who was wealthy and was clothed with purple and white linen, having brilliantly celebrated down to day by day. Now, there was some pauper named Lazarus, who had been tossed toward his doorway, being ulcerous and longing to be fed off the crumbs falling from the table of the wealthy one. Instead, even the dogs (coming by) licked his sores. Now, it was caused to be that the pauper died and he was borne away (by the aggelon [messengers, angels] ) into the bosom of Abraham. Now, also the wealthy one died and was interred. And being in torture in Haides [Unseen, subterranean world of the dead, Hades], raising up his eyes, he sees (from afar) Abraham and Lazarus in his bosom. And he phonesas [shouting said], ‘Father Abraham! have compassion upon me and dispatch Lazarus in order that he may bapse [dip] the tip of his finger in water and may cool down my tongue because I am grieving in this flame. Now, Abraham said, ‘Child! bear in mind that you fully received your good in your life and Lazarus similarly received the kaka [worthless] but now he is parakaleitai [comforted] but you are grieving. And above all these issues, between us and you a mega chasm has been set so that those thelontes [determining, choosing, deciding] to cross from here towards you aren’t able, lest those from there might cross over towards us.’"
