Lesson 117 Amplified -- PATIENCE

American: forbearing, patient, patiently enduring

American: forbearance, patience, fortitude, patient restraint

HUPOMONE

American: cheerful endurance, constancy 

Mature Christians thoroughly understand that Father God is constantly making decisions for their growth and for their wellbeing. When faced with apparently bad circumstances, they patiently endure with wide open eyes, seeking the next step to take, listening for directions. 

Almost Greek: (Words in italics are translator’s additions.) 

1^st Corinthians 9.9: For us it was written because the one plowing ought to plow upon elpidi [expectation, hope] and he threshing to thresh upon elpidos of sharing in the elpidi harvest. If we sowed to you spiritual things, is it mega if we shall reap from you the fleshly things? If others in you have a share, shouldn’t we have more? But we not used this privilege; conversely, we stegomen [patiently endured] all in order that we not give anyone a hindrance to receiving the euaggelio [good news, gospel, evangel] of the Christou [Anointed One, Messiah, Christ]. Don't you know that those toiling in sacred things eat the food of the temple? Those attending the altar partake with the altar. So also, the Kurios instituted that those kataggellousin [announcing, proclaiming] were to live off the euaggeliou. But I haven’t used even one of these privileges. I not write these words in order that it should be done so with me for I would rather die than that anyone should make my boast empty. For if I euaggelizomai [announce good news, evangelize], there isn’t a thing to boast of for the necessity to do so rests upon me and woe is to me if I not euaggelizomai. For if I voluntarily do this, I have wages but if involuntarily, am I still entrusted with administration? What then are my wages? that when I euaggelizomenos, I lay out the euaggelion of the Christou without charge so as not to use my privilege in the euaggelio to the full. 

2^nd Corinthians 6.3: I should not even one person (in not even one issue) be giving cause of stumbling in order that the service not be blamed. Conversely, in all I am presenting myself as a servant of Theos: in much hupomone, in stress, in constraint, hemmed in, in stripes [whipped], in imprisonment, in riot, in toil, in sleeplessness, in fasting, in purity, in knowledge, in makrothumia, in kindness, in the Hagios Pneuma, in unfeigned agape, in a logos of truth, in the dunamei [force, power] of Theos; via the implements of dikaiosunes [equity, justification, rightness] of the right hand [offensively] and of the left hand [defensively]; via glory and via infamy; via defamation and via praise; as a vagrant and yet as true; as unknown and yet as well-known; as dying and notice, I live; as paideuomenoi [trained, chastened, chastised] and yet not killed; as grieved and yet always joyful; as a beggar but making many wealthy; as not having even one possession and yet possessing the whole world. 

Colossians 1.9: Via this [From the day we heard], we also don’t pause [stop] proseuchomenoi [humbly begging of God; praying] to Theos over you and asking that you be made replete [complete] in recognition of His thelematos [determination, choice, decision, decree] in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. And that you be made to walk appropriately of the Kuriou, compliant to all in every good work; that you are being fertile and growing into the recognition of Theos in all dunamei, being empowered [enabled] down [according] to the great vigor of His glory to all a hupomone and makrothumian; that you amidst charas [cheerfulness, calm delight, joy] eucharistountes [are gratefully giving thanks] to the Father to qualify us to the portion of the lot of the hagion [holy, sacred, consecrated ones; saints] in the Light [Jesus]. 

Luke 5.7: Then be makrothumeo, brothers, until the return of the Kuriou. LO! the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the earth, being makrothumon over it until it might receive the early and the later ueton [rain]. You also be makrothumesate! Sterizate [securely set, make steadfast] your hearts because the return of the Kuriou has drawn near. Not bring pressure [stress] down against one another, brothers, in order that you not katakrithete [are distinguished, are judged, are put on trial]. LO! the krites [judge] stands in front of the door. As an example of suffering hardship and of makrothunias, my brothers, take the prophetas who spoke in the name [authority] of the Kuriou. LO! we pronounce those enduring, fortunate. You heard of the hupomone of Job, and you know the Kuriou’s telos [end] for him; that the Kurios is extremely compassionate and merciful. 

James 1.2: Count it all joy, my Brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your pisteos [faith, reliance] works hupomone. Now let hupomone have its perfect [complete] work in order that you may be perfect and complete, having lacked in not even one thing.

 

Hebrews 6.9: But we want each one of you to show the same spouden [speed, alacrity, eagerness] to the full assurance of the elpidos unto the telos [point aimed at, the end of this age], in order that you aren’t caused to be dull but caused to be imitators of those inheriting the promises via pisteos and makrothumias.

 

Hebrews 10.35: Then don’t cast away your confidence which has megalen reward. For you have need of hupomones, in order that, having done the thelema [determination, choice, decision, decree] of Theos, you may obtain the epaggelian [announcement, proclamation, promise]. For “yet a micron of time, the coming One will come and not delay but the just will live emergent from pisteos” and “if he draws back My psuche [soul, life, psyche, ego] isn’t pleased in him” [added by Paul from another Scripture]. 

Hebrews 12: So, we having such a cloud of witnesses encircling us, putting [throwing] away [behind] every weight [an Olympics dash racing metaphor] and the easily surrounded hamartian [misses of the mark or goal; errors, offenses, sins], let us run the race set before us via hupomones; looking to the Author and Finisher of our pisteos -- Jesus. Who against the charas set before Him, endured the stake, despising shame and sat down at the right of Theos’ throne.
